"Now we has jazz!"

The creation of jazz by African-Americans is one of the most important musical achievements of the twentieth century. Its influence can be heard in all kinds of modern music, popular as well as in art music. With many of the students in the class already having a love of this music, it was time to educate the rest. Ensemble performances for the annual music concert explored several contrasting styles, while their composition skills were extended using a 12 bar blues variation called the ‘Quick Change Blues’. They used the program Flat.io to notate their compositions for sax, trombone, drums and guitar, including dynamics and performance techniques.
