Year 7 Music
Year 7 Music is all about exploring the foundations of how Music works and having a go at learning an instrument. Throughout the year students explore rhythm, compose melodies and learn about the instruments of the Orchestra and Program music.
Feel the Beat
Hema, Many, Emily and Elsie from 7.3 perform their polyrhythm.
Music has a heartbeat and term one is all about rhythm! Students composed their own four bar rhythm and then combined it with three other students to create a layered polyrhythm! Groups performed using a range of untuned percussion instruments.
Below is the score for Anas, Minh, Ian and Zac's polyrhythm entitled "The Sense".
Online Learning
During online learning, our students found creative ways to continue their music making at home. At the start of term 2, students explored A Capella Vocal Ensembles by creating their own layered composition using Incredibox. Have a listen to some of their creations!
Finally, students put the pressure on the teachers by creating quizzes about various orchestral instruments. They included research about the origin of the instrument, sound production and its role in the Symphony Orchestra.

Composition
In Term Three students explored the musical concept of Pitch and created their own melodies.
This video displays one composition by Nike from 7.7
"My favourite instrument I learnt about this year would be the contrabassoon. I enjoyed learning about this instrument and I found out that it was developed in the end of the 17th century and that it was first developed in England. It is the largest version of the bassoon and is 20mm in width and in length it is measured to be between 65 - 75mm and is part of the woodwind family. I like this instrument because it has a very interesting shape. Its shape is like a U. I also enjoyed the sound of the contrabassoon because it has a very unique sound. It sounds like a deep croak that comes from a gigantic frog." - Niti Kottani 7.3
Student Reflections on Instruments of the Orchestra:
"My Favourite instrument that I learnt about this year would be the harp. I enjoyed learning about this instrument this year because I learnt so many things about the harp. Some of these things include that it has existed since around 15,000 BC which makes it one of the oldest instruments in the world. The harp has 47 strings and 7 pedals. It weighs 36 kilograms and is 1.8 meters high, giving the harp the second biggest rank in the string family. I also really enjoy the sound of the harp because it sounds very majestic, grand and gentle." ~ Eleanor Robertson 7.3
