Building on the knowledge and skills developed in Year 9, the Year 10 Elective Music students have analysed and evaluated a range of music from contemporary and past times, using their findings to shape and refine their own compositions and performances, having fun and enriching their music making experiences.

Theatre Music

‘There’s no business like show business’ so they say, and while COVID restrictions limited their performance opportunities, the students had a great time learning about musicals and why they remain so popular today.

Able to choose their own songs for solo performances and focusing in class on Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Into the Woods’ and ABBA’s ‘Mamma Mia! Here we Go Again’, an easing of restrictions created some fabulous individual performances as well as memorable renditions and rehearsals of ‘Agony’ and ‘Super Trouper’.

Check out our Super Year 10 Music students Zoe, Ollie, Cate, Aiden, Tasha and Sasha performing "Super Trouper" in true ABBA style.

Nineteenth-Century Music

The Nineteenth century, colloquially known as the Romantic Period, represented a reaction against the balance, order and emotional restraint of the Classical period. The artists, writers and composers of this period drew inspiration from the past, the natural and the supernatural worlds, and the exotic or fantastic.

Selections from Peer Gynt Suites I and II by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg and The Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky were the focus works for this unit of study.

Working in groups during online learning, students composed a short piece based on the recurring rhythms found in Trépak.

Student Reflections

I enjoyed doing zoom music classes in quarantine, they would always brighten up the sad times when we were stuck at home.

I enjoyed playing “I feel good” as a band.

I enjoyed learning about theatre music and our pracs together as
a class.

I enjoyed the performance elements and having creative freedom when performing in groups as well as solos.

I enjoyed learning about Jazz scales and doing practical activities in the Jazz style.

Jazz Music

Exploring a range of styles and chords, one of the tasks undertaken was to compose their own lyrics for a blues song, then write a melody and accompaniment to go with them.

They also performed several ensemble pieces, one of which can be seen here.

Have a listen to Zoe, Tasha, Cate, Aiden, Sasha, Ollie, Josh and Lukas performing "I got you".
