Year 9 Photography

Year 9 Photographic and Digital Media students have explored a variety of topics this year and dipped their toe into themes from Light and Shadows, Cinematography, Still Life and Portraiture.

Shapes and Shadows

Here are some examples from our exploration of Light and Shadows.

These abstracted images were captured by arranging folded and scrunched paper and casting shadows using direct and staged lighting.

Activities

Our students worked hard to develop and extend their digital artmaking skills this year.

The juxtaposed collages and liquified movement edits are two examples of mini tasks students completed!

One-minute films

Students began exploring the role of the cinematographer, learning about how camera angles are used to create or reinforce mood and draw focus.

Working in groups, they created  one-minute films, using the new techniques they had learnt.

Students created a storyboard, allocated individual roles based on strengths and interests, and spent lessons shooting and editing their scenes. Check out some examples below to see how they turned out!

Following this, students moved to online learning where they created individual one-minute films based on the theme of “Lockdown Life”.

Lockdown Life

Still Life, Self Portrait

Additionally, during our time in lockdown, students developed their understanding of the Still Life genre and the symbolic meaning of objects.

Students then created a series of still life images that through their considered arrangement and inclusion of objects become a still life "self portrait" reflecting key aspects of their personality, values, beliefs, attitudes and interests.

Stop Motion Animation

For extension, students used objects from their still life, self portrait to create a short, stop motion animation to bring their work to life.

Take a look at some of the creative examples below!

Promotional imagery

Returning to school after lockdown, we began a unit on Product Photography and advertising. Students  put our understanding to the test and challenged themselves to shoot and create their own promotional images!

Video Advertisements

Students continued to extend themselves to create short promotional video's for their chosen object or product. Working in groups, students planned, filmed and edited their clips, aiming to capture the essence of the product and create a successful advertisement that entices and  engages  the audience.
