Year 11 Music
Year 11 Music explores a wide range of musical genres, extends students with more advanced musical ideas and allows students to focus on their chosen instrument. The subject is split into two courses which have slightly different topic and skill areas.
Composition
During fourth term in Course 2 music, we have been investigating different scales and harmonies for use in our compositions. Students have been completing 8 bar exercises using the notation program Flat, to realise their ideas.
Some of these ideas may contribute to their mandatory HSC Australian compositions. The examples here include tone clusters, bitonality and wholetone scales.
Performances
Geographical Fugue by Ernst Toch is a spoken fugue for voice which allows students to rehearse their understanding of duration. We started our year 11 exploration of the concept of duration with this score reading exercise. Covid has made group performance activities difficult to coordinate particularly those which rely upon interlocking parts such as this one. Online performances have mainly had to be individual due to time lag issues.
