Building on from the Year 9 course, the Year 10 Elective Music students have performed, analysed and evaluated a range of music from different time periods and genres. The first half of the year focused on practical skills and the second half on analytical and aural skills due to covid-19 restrictions.

Musical Maddness

To celebrate the end of what has been a truly crazy year the Year 10 Music class planned, choreographed, performed and filmed a music video for the song "Another Day of Sun" from the musical "La La Land.

Due to the remaining covid-19 restrictions around practical activities students were not able to perform using instruments; however, this didn't get in their way!

They hope it puts even a small smile on your face!

Polynesian Music

Year 10 began the year exploring the music of various Polynesian cultures. Students learnt about specific aspects of Polynesian Music such as Polyrhythms, use of language and harmony in singing, and chord construction.

Singing is a key aspect to music in Polynesian countries so it was more than appropriate for year 10 to learn lots of songs during this unit.

Here the class is performing the Maori folk song "Hokki Mai".

Polyrhythm composition based on music by the band "Te Vaka"

A Hawaiian Chant "Oli Mahalo"

Compositions

To demonstrate their understanding of the Polynesian style students composed a short song using a Maori Poem. Their challenge was to incorporate elements of rhythm, melody and chords in their composition and to enlist their peers in the performance of their composition!

Multicultural Day

As part of the School's Multicultural Day events our Music class performed the Maori song "Pate Pate" written by the band Te Vaka

Students sang in harmony and accompanied themselves with classroom instruments such as ukulele, guitar and percussion instruments.

Australian Contemporary Music

The second topic for the course brought us back to Australia as we focused on Australian Music from the last decade.

Students built on their exploration of Rock and Pop in year 9 with the focus point being on the contemporary Australian style.

Students formed bands and created a cover version of a recent Australian song. This was inspired by the Triple J radio station "Like a Version" event.

Izzy, Lachie, Mary, Brayton and Frankie performing "Used to be in Love" by the Jungle Giants.

During this task, students were challenged to consider stage presence as a way to enhance their overall presentation.

Sienna, Mia, Lachlan, Aden and Isabel performing "Booster Seat" by Spacey Jane.

Ezra, Alex, Strahan, Kirra, Aleksandra and Royce performing "Like it Like that" by Guy Sebastian.

For the analysis component of this unit students had to write an essay discussing how the artist fits into the Contemporary Australian Style whilst adding their own flare.

Have a read of an excerpt from Strahan's essay:

"Guy Sebastian uses elements of many genres in his music to reflect the style of contemporary pop music whilst also adding his own flare. He uses instrumentation from genres such as soul and pop music as well as adding instruments not common in pop and soul such as flute. He utilises the characteristics of pop music in his music by incorporating simple lyrics and rhythms, a basic structure, and an upbeat feeling. He creates a contemporary song by adding uncommon and complex, percussive rhythms, electronically created synthetic sounds, and variations in structure. Finally, by adding elements of soul music and catchy rhythms, Guy Sebastian manages to effectively add his own flare to his music whilst remaining in the style of a contemporary pop song."

Yearly Performances

During online learning students completed their yearly performance assessment which involved them learning a piece of music from one of the topics studied this year. Unfortunately students were not able to perform for each other; however, below are some of our students recordings that they submitted.

Frankie singing "Falling up" by Dean Lewis

Alex performing "Skeletons" by Tame Impala on the guitar.

Brayton performing "Pua Makahala" on the guitar.

Ezra performing "Sly" by the Cat Empire on the Drums

Mary singing "Rain on my parade" from the musical Funny Girl.

Mia singing "To Perth before the border closes"

Other Highlights

As an activity during online learning students explored melody and harmony by creating layered audio of their voices performing popular songs. This activity was based off the tiktok trend of duetting and some students were very creative!
